Shradh or Pitru Paksha Dates 2023 – Significance of Paying Homage to Their Ancestors
Shradh is a 15 lunar day’s period which is considered quite important in order to pay homage to their ancestors. During Shradh, people do worship and pay respect to their ancestors offering food.
As per South Indian Amavasyant Calendar, it comes in the lunar month of Bhadrapada in the starting of the full moon day or day after full moon day.
Lunar Month of Ashwin
Moreover, this period comes in the lunar month of Ashwin as per the North Indian Purnimant. It starts with the full moon day in Bhadrapada or next day of full moon day. It is just nomenclature of lunar months which is completely different from North and South India’s notion.
Here, it needs to mention that the last day of Pitru Paksha is regarded as Sarvapitri Amavasyaa or Mahalaya Amavasya. To put in simple words, Mahalaya Amavasya is regarded as an important day of Pitru Paksha.
Why Shradh is Important?
During this time, devotees do worship the ancestors to seek their blessings and asking for forgiveness for any wrong things if happened by them.
It is said that this way helps them to get Moksha. It means they would be get free from the loop of Birth, death and rebirth. There are varieties of offerings done such as Pind Daan and Tarpan.
